Endless Summer

It's hot and humid and October already. This isn't going to be a complaint, or some rant about global warming. I actually like the warm weather. It just seems to have gone on for so long.

It feels as if it began about a week after Jim went into the hospital, and whenever I jump off a bus into the warm humidity I get a sense of deja vu of dozens, hundreds of buses jumped off on the way to and from a hospital or a nursing home or stopping off shopping at Trader Joe's on the way back from a hospital or a nursing home.

Those buses provided me with a lot of "me" time, and I'm thankful for that, but I'm ready for a new "me."

And new weather will help? By breaking the sensory associations that are so profound.

I remember what a relief it was that the first anniversary of September 11 wasn't the same kind of day -- horribly pristine and beautiful.

Yes, as I recall, 9/11/02 was an uncomfortably windy day. I went out shopping after work and almost packed it in and went home because of the wind.

I'd gone into a store in Soho that was having some kind of sample sale. They had a talk radio station on and people were calling with stories of where they were on 9/11.

All day long on the news, they were saying the city was on Orange Alert.

When I got home, Jim was opening a can of tuna and Chico appeared on the kitchen table, THOCK! out of nowhere.

Jim said, "He's on Orange Alert."
